gluten-free berry dessert

Mixed berry crisp (gluten free & vegan) will be the healthiest, most guilt-free dessert that you will ever have.  Berries are a pure gift from nature.  This dessert is sweetened with only maple syrup and happens to be gluten-free and dairy-free. My healthy triple berry crisp recipe is loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals that fight disease and keep you healthy.

I am entirely obsessed with berries of all kinds.  It is actually a dream of mine to own a u-pick berry farm one day or in the very least, have enough berry bushes on my property to supply all my family and friends with berries. I actually have a mature cherry tree in my yard that produces dozens and dozens of pounds of cherries every July and we just planted a few raspberry bushes that were gifted to me from friends.  To top it all off, we are in Maine – the land of wild blueberries.  We have an extra freezer dedicated solely to blueberries that store 200+ lbs of blueberries that we order every August.  Maine wild blueberries are the # 1 superfood on the entire planet, didn’t you know?

This summer berry crumble uses blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and cherries for the filling in this recipe.  The filling is punctuated with lemon juice and maple syrup to bring out the natural tartness and sweetness in the berries. Arrowroot is used to help create the most luxurious gooey consistency that holds it all together.

Frozen berry crumble is a convenient, easy to make dessert that can be made any time of the year regardless of the season and access to fresh berries.  I chose frozen berries due to berries not being in season right now.

I used plant-based butter from the brand Miyokos and the sweet crumble topping is made from oat flour and a blend of other gluten-free flours.

Easy Berry Crumble

  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 cup raspberries
  • 1 cup cherries
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice and 1 tsp zest
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 3/4 cup 1:1 gf baking all purpose flour mix from Red Bob’s Mill
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup sugar
  • 6 Tbsp butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt

How to make vegan berry crisp:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Combine the frozen berries to the baking dish or cast iron pan.  If using fresh berries, be sure to give them a good wash or soak them in water with a little vinegar.
  3. Wash and dry the lemon then zest it using a microplane and add it to the berries.  Cut the lemon in half and juice it.  Add the juice to the berries.
  4. Add the maple syrup and arrowroot and stir until everything is fully incorporated.
  5. In a separate bowl, make the crumble topping by adding the oat flour, gf mixed flour, maple syrup sugar, salt and fully mix the ingredients.
  6. Chop the butter into pieces and add them to the dry ingredients, work the butter in until it turns into a crumble consistency.  Add the crumble to the top of the berries and place in the oven.
  7. I recommend putting a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  The cold ice cream in contrast to the hot dessert will send this dessert to a new level!

Notes for gluten free dairy free berry crisp:

-If you’re wondering “can I use frozen berries?” – Yes – I did for this recipe an it works great, is easy and convenient.

-Fresh or frozen berries: The cook time is approximately the same but the frozen technically could go for a few more minutes in the oven.

-It is popular to use whole oats mixed in to the crumble topping.  If you are wanting to make a traditional healthy berry crumble with oats, add 1 cup of oats and omit half the amount of both the oat flour and gf mix flour.

-Looking to make berry crisp for two? Quarter this recipe and you will have the perfect amount for 1 serving of dessert for two.

-Healthy berry crumble can be made with any flour topping you like – wheat flour, brown rice flour, almond flour, oat flour, or a pre-made mix.  You can use the same ratios for any flour that you choose.

-Options for sweeteners: organic cane sugar, date sugar or date syrup, coconut sugar, maple syrup sugar, stevia, xylitol, honey.

-This is a mixed berry crisp without oats on top (whole oats) but I did use oat flour.  You can certainly choose to omit the oat flour and replace it with almond flour or brown rice flour.

-This recipe can be frozen and will keeps good for up to 3 months if packaged and sealed properly.  You can double seal it with plastic wrap and then a air tight lid on top of that to be extra cautious.
