Crispy tortilla pizza might just be the best quick, no-hassle weeknight dinner. Using flour tortillas for the pizza “crust” means saving the time from making your own pizza dough, which would take you half a day. This meal takes less than 5 minutes to make! About 15 minutes to cook up in the oven in a cast iron skillet and you have a tasty meal. Tortilla pizza can include any toppings – throw on a load of veggies if you want to make this a healthier option. If you are wondering how to make homemade pizza with tortillas read on for instructions.
When I was a kid I was a big fan of Pizza Hut’s thin crust pizza. Then when I discovered Mexican pizza made using flour tortillas it was a no brainer for me – this is the ultimate homemade thin crust pizza! Tortilla pizza in a pan is an easy and convenient way to get the crispy and thin pizza experience at home.
This chicken tortilla pizza recipe features ground chicken chorizo sausage, butternut squash, jalapeños, an adobo sauce and cheese. I am all about making tortilla pizza healthy and its easy to pick toppings that add some bonus nutrition. You can use adobo sauce as I did, or you can use regular tomato based pizza sauce. You can find chipotle peppers in adobo sauce in a can at the grocery store. Disclaimer – the adobo sauce is on the spicy side! I used large 8-10 inch flour tortillas, this works and tastes the best for skillet pizza. If you don’t like any of the toppings listed, swap them out for your favorites!
The best tip I have for making tortilla pizzas is to use a cast iron pan. The shape of the pan is perfect for keeping the cheese on the tortilla and off of the pan, avoiding a burnt mess. If your cast iron is not very well seasoned, make sure to coat the pan with a little oil – this will also help to give an extra crisp to the bottom.
After the skillet tortilla pizza came out of the oven all crispy and melty, I put some fresh toppings on. I chose cilantro and avocado but you can top with any fresh toppings you love. A final sentiment is a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
This recipe dominates for a diy extra thin crust crispy pizza experience. No more pizza hut needed.
